How your Donations Help
Because we support people with a range of needs, when a method of working proves successful we are able to transfer it, when appropriate, for the benefit of others. That way we improve the quality of life of more people.
Today, PSS manages three major services, providing personal and practical help to thousands of people across the UK.
- Adult Placement
- Home & Community: Children & Families
- Home and Community: Mental Health, Social Care and Counselling
Here are the stories of just some of the people we have helped.
Jamelia’s Story - Adult Placement
Jamelia is a young person of 17 years who self harms and has a tendency to abuse medication. A referral was made to PSS to provide an Adult Placement for Jamelia to assess her accommodation needs.
Jamelia settled quickly into the carer's home and said that it was the first time in many years she's felt safe and valued in a family setting.
The Adult Placement Carer worked closely with project staff and other professionals to help Jamelia develop an awareness of the dangers of her medication abuse. She is now able to self medicate with low level supervision and her mental well-being has greatly improved.
Jamelia’s carer also provided opportunities for her to develop independent living skills at home and now she's enrolled at the local college for basic English and Maths. Jamelia has joined a therapeutic course of Indian head massage and a local art group where she's made friends.
Jamelia gained a real sense of community presence with our Adult Placement service and after just nine months, PSS helped her to move into a flat. "My PSS carer was a great cook so I learnt how to use recipes and eat things that are good for you, but it's even better to have my own place and to be able to look after myself"
Michael’s Story - Home & Community: Children & Families
“I’m Michael and I am 14 years old. I have 2 brothers, Barry, 8, and Adam, 5, and a sister, Lucy, 6. They all have different levels of autism. I was very scared about going to the PSS Siblings Project as I thought no one could have it as bad as we have.
People don’t understand when they see my younger brother screaming, they think he is just being naughty when really it is the only way he knows how to get attention.
Going to the PSS Siblings Project gives me a break away from the crazy house I live in. I have made new friends and realise that there are others who have a family as crazy as mine. The group provides a chance to talk to others about the problems having a brother or sister with disabilities and we always have a great laugh when we go out on trips.
I’m so glad I decided to go to the PSS Siblings Project, as I know there is always somewhere else to go when things get too hectic at home.”
Sue’s Story - Home and Community: Mental Health, Social Care and Counselling
Sue had been diagnosed with depression and an eating disorder. She was too afraid to venture out of the house alone. For many months she had attended a number of different mental health services and was confused and despairing.
Eventually, Sue’s GP referred her to PSS who provided support and encouragement, liaised with other health professionals and acted as her advocate. PSS staff arranged and attended care plan meetings with Sue, constantly encouraging her to be proud of her achievements and helping her to seek further support for her eating disorder.
As a result, Sue’s confidence increased. She joined in groups and was eventually able to venture out alone. She now has a way forward for the future and her ultimate aim is, in her words, “to live a normal life”.
Sue says: “Without PSS, I would still be stuck at home in bed, with blankets at the window to keep everything out.”
