Meet the PSS Trustees.


Chair of Trustees

Mark Rathbone


PSS Trustee - Mark Rathbone


Mark gained his graduate degree in Philosophy and Politics from Edinburgh University before converting to Law and successfully completing the Legal Practice Course.

He worked as a trainee solicitor at a leading firm of lawyers in Liverpool before transferring to his current firm of Brabners Chaffe Street where he is now a partner. Mark is a corporate and commercial solicitor working mainly on transactional and funding work.

As well as being Chair of PSS and a member of its Audit Committee, Mark is also a member of the Eleanor Rathbone Charitable Trust.

Geoffrey Manning


PSS Trustee - Geoffrey Manning


After graduating from Cambridge University in engineering, Geoffrey worked in engineering management for a number of years culminating in running a subsidiary company of a metals and plastic manufacturing conglomerate. During this period, he became a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.

Following a year at Cranfield University, where he gained an MBA, he joined a firm of Consulting Engineers in Building Services as a Partner. He retired after 22 years with the firm, but still acts as a Consultant to them.

Geoffrey has been actively involved in the Voluntary Aided sector since early in his working career. He was Chairman of the Old Swan Youth Club for many years and has been a Trustee of PSS for longer than he cares to remember.

Rob Aitken


PSS Trustee - Rob Aitken


Rob is a partner at a national firm of accountants and specialises in advising charities and not for profit organisations on accounting, strategic and governance matters.

After graduating from the University of Manchester he trained with Price Waterhouse, qualified as an Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) and subsequently obtained the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) Charity Diploma.

As well as being the Honorary Treasurer on PSS’s Board of Trustees, Rob also chairs its Audit Committee.

Hilary Berg


PSS Trustee - Hilary Berg


Hil has over 25 years of experience as an independent brand and communications consultant and has worked for some of the UK’s best known companies. In the last 10 years she has worked extensively on social, regeneration and community issues. Her expertise lies in developing successful communications strategies that build profile and awareness, and help bring about positive social change.

She has a passion for social enterprise, which involved her helping to set up a community business in Kathmandu, Nepal, and she has since worked in Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States. She has set up and run two award-winning consultancy businesses in the North West.

Hil works for the School for Social Entrepreneurs as a teacher, coach and mentor to start-up community businesses. She is also a Trustee of Merseyside Youth Association and Communications Advisor to the North East Wales Search and Rescue Team.

She is a Chartered Public Relations Practitioner and has a Postgraduate Diploma in PR.

Angela Jones


PSS Trustee - Angela Jones


Angela trained as a teacher, was Deputy Head of a Community High School and finally was an Local Education Authority Adviser - Personal Social and Health Education. In 1992 she became a Non Executive Director for Liverpool Family Health Authority and then on Liverpool Health Authority. In 1998 she became Chair of Liverpool Cardiothoracic Centre (now Heart and Chest NHS Foundation Trust) and January 2001 became Chair of Alder Hey on the day that the Redfern Report was published.

Angela stood down as Chair In October 2010 and has since been awarded the title of Honorary Past Chair by the Directors and Council of Governors allowing her maintain her close links with all at the Trust.

Angela was a volunteer in Merseyside Samaritans for thirteen years and Chaired the Committee for two and a half years. Also she chaired Brook Advisory - sexual heath, young people for seven years.

Currently she chairs Heart of Mersey, a non NHS Public Health organisation and is Trustee on three others including PSS. Throughout all of this Angela has been a strong advocate for equality and diversity, has maintained links with politicians locally and nationally and has worked closely with the media.

Andrew Kellaway


PSS Trustee - Andrew Kellaway



Following a peripatetic education (five schools in eight years) Andrew attended college in Liverpool following which he joined the Quantity surveying practice of Todd and Ledson.

He qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and remained with the practice for the entirety of his career, ending up as senior partner. He now acts as a consultant to the practice.

He is a past trustee and chairman of The Community Foundation for Merseyside.

Helen King


PSS Trustee - Helen King


Helen has been a police officer since she joined Cheshire Constabulary. She has worked at all ranks, in a range of roles including, uniform, CID, Professional Standards and Human Resources. She transferred into Merseyside Police as an Assistant Chief Constable.

Helen led the establishment of a new portfolio entitled ‘Citizen Focus’, which incorporated Communications and Marketing, Calls & Crime Recording, Corporate Criminal Justice, and the Citizen Focus Department. The portfolio has delivered improvements in satisfaction and confidence in Merseyside Police.

She was also the Force’s lead for Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, as well as chairing most of the Force’s Police Misconduct Panels.

Helen took over the Force’s Operations portfolio, responsible for the Merseyside’s six policing Areas and management of over 4000 police officers and staff. She is a Gold public order, firearms and CBRN commander and a Police National Assessment Centre assessor.

She has an MA from Oxford University, having studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at St Anne’s College. In 1995 she also gained an MA in Police Management from Manchester University and Helen completed the Strategic Command Course and a Diploma in Applied Criminology from Cambridge University.

Andrew Salami


PSS Trustee - Andrew Salami


Alfred was born in Nigeria and now lives in Liverpool, working for Liverpool City Council as a Principal Officer in the Neighbourhood Management Services. He was educated in the UK and has a MA Degree in Sociology from the University of Liverpool.

As well as sitting on the Board of PSS, he also sits on a number of other boards including: Pinecourt Housing Association, The Methodist Youth Centre, Chara Trust, Cofa (UK) & Cofa (Ghana). Alfred has experience in Local Government; Housing, Human Resources, Equality and Diversity, Training, Project Management, and Policy Analysis.

David Shortall


PSS Trustee - David Shortall





David originally attended Board meetings as a Volunteer Representative before becoming a full trustee. He is also a volunteer with PSS’ Palliative Care project.

David has qualifications in computer studies and recently attained an Honours Degree in Health and Social Care from the Open University.

Tim Marshall


PSS Trustee - Tim Marshall





Tim was a partner with Bremner Sons & Corlett, before they became part of Brabners Chaffe Street, where Tim is also a partner.

He has been involved with PSS for over 30 years, having been on the Executive Committee for approx 10 years before becoming an adviser to the Board of Trustees.
